Daniel L. Girdwood

Of Counsel

E. Kim Garrett

Dan Girdwood, Of Counsel, is a licensed patent attorney with 20+ years of experience. He brings a balanced approach to patenting, based on several years of experience and education in engineering, accounting, and business. Dan’s practice focuses primarily on procuring, licensing and enforcing patents, primarily for mechanical inventions, and in registering and enforcing trademarks, but also includes various related areas such as helping with business startups, licensing and technology transfer, and business planning. Dan emphasizes that patenting ought to make “cents,” and in support of that, he brings a strong financial background, including completing an MBA from Michigan State University, and passing Michigan’s CPA and the Series 7 financial licensure exams. He also has a strong engineering background based on his experience as an engineer at General Motors for 15 years. Dan has taught as an adjunct professor at Thomas Cooley Law School, Lansing Community College and Grand Valley State University.

Dan encourages “profitable innovation” with a mix of fun, reality, and passion. For Dan, it is about entrepreneurs building a team, figuring out a sound business strategy, and selling product. He believes that clients should take some risk and move forward, but do so in a way that minimizes expense and only incurs cost when it is logical and justified. As part of that, Dan is the founder and former president of Grand Rapids Inventors Network, a non-profit where inventors meet and give each other feedback
