James K. Leonard, Ph.D.
Dr. James Leonard is an associate of the firm and focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution in addition to preparing patentability, validity, and infringement opinions. James commonly works with technical subject matter dealing with chemicals, polymers, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food science, and medical device related inventions. Prior to joining Price Heneveld, James worked as an in-house attorney in the specialty chemical industry.
James is a registered patent attorney with extensive experience handling procurement matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including patent application drafting and prosecution, and conducting examiner interviews. He is a frequent speaker at colleges and professional groups regarding a variety of intellectual property (IP) topics including patent procurement and building a strong intellectual property portfolio.
James draws from his chemical background and industry experience to support clients as they seek to launch new products while developing a strong complementary IP portfolio. His experience further includes counseling clients on nondisclosure, joint venture, and procurement agreements. He was lead inventor on two patent applications and authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in pursuit of his doctoral dissertation titled, “Precision Polyethylene Designed for Biological Applications.”
James is passionate about helping people and businesses, and currently sits on the Grand Rapids Inventors Network (GRIN) board.
